What is MCT oil?

When reading about the keto diet, you might have come across the term “MCT” often.  But what is it exactly? It’s a form of healthy fat, which is essential for the keto metabolism.  Remember that fats can be saturated or unsaturated, and they can be further classified into short-chain, medium-chain, and long-chain fatty acids.  MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides,  in other words, medium chain fatty acids.  The shorter the length of the fatty acid chain, the faster is its digestion.  Hence MCTs are digested quickly and are delivered directly to the liver where they are easily transformed into ketones.

MCT oil is ideal for a keto diet as it allows you to get energy rapidly from fats, your primary source of energy.  MCTs are naturally present in palm oil and dairy products but are mainly found in coconut oil.  MCTs consist of more than 50% of the fats in coconut oil.  The most effective and common blend of MCT oil consists of caprylic acid and capric acid.  MCTs are available as powders, ideal for adding to your smoothie or coffee for an energy boost.
